Paris Chong asks costume designer Mona May about the extensive use of plaid and boas in the costuming for the film Clueless. Mona May explains that the script, written by Amy Heckerling, was the blueprint for the designs. Heckerling had a strong vision, basing the modern-day Beverly Hills rich girls on Jane Austen's Emma. Mona May notes that the film's super-fashionable, high-fashion aesthetic, including the signature plaid, was a deliberate counterpoint to the prevailing grunge style of 1995 when the movie was made.
